ONLINE 8 Week Autumn Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP) Group

This course is for you if you:

  • find that you have concerns about your relationship with substances such as alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, opioids.
  • may also be dealing with increased stress, anxiety, low mood or other mental wellness issues which may affect substance use
  • have undergone some treatment (residential, outpatient or community-based) and wish to maintain your treatment gains and more fully develop a lifestyle which supports wellbeing and recovery. However, prior treatment is not a requirement.  

In this online 8-week course you will:

  • Gain an understanding on how to decrease cravings and build a stronger focus on the here and now.
  • Develop awareness of personal triggers and habitual reactions, and learn ways to create pause in this seemingly automatic process
  • Change your relationship to discomfort, learning to recognize challenging emotional and physical experiences and respond to them in skillful ways
  • Foster a nonjudgmental, compassionate approach toward yourself and your experiences
  • Build a lifestyle that supports both mindfulness practice and recovery

Important additional information:

  • Group Instructors embrace both an abstinence and a harm reduction approach
  • An online group may not be safe for you at this time if you are experiencing active and untreated psychosis (including schizophrenia, schizoaffective or other schizophreniform disorder) and/or dementia, acute suicidality/intent to harm others, severe cognitive impairment, and high risk of withdrawal or medical complications stemming from relapse which would require a higher level of care. 
  • A 15-minute screening will be requested to allow a participant to ask questions, meet with group facilitators and determine if the MBRP group is a good fit for client needs.

Dates and Times:

This online course runs for 8 consecutive Thursdays from 4:00pm-5:30pm (1.5 hours weekly) from October 14 to December 2, 2021

Cost:  $695+HST due by October 6, 2021.

Early Bird Pricing:  $645+HST if registered and paid by September 1, 2021.

Payment in full due at the time of registration by e-transfer to info@ottawariverpsychology.com or credit card through our Ottawa River Psychology Group administrator at 613-656-3331.  See information below on how to register.

Fees Include:  access to MBRP materials and resources created/offered by Group Instructors.

Refunds available until 7 days prior to course start date.

Receipts are offered for insurance coverage by extended health insurance. Please check with your insurance plan before registering for the course if you plan to seek reimbursement and if you are not sure if your insurance provider will cover this very valuable course. Student experiences with their insurance plans have varied in the past.  Many insurance companies in Canada, the US and abroad have a history of covering this course.

This course is being offered online via Zoom due to COVID-19.  The Zoom link will be sent to registrants on October 11, 2021.

About Group Instructors:

David Hesidence is a Registered Psychotherapist (# 002794) with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. Meeting these standards involves specific training and clinical experience. David meets these standards through Master’s level training, a certificate in Trauma and Addictions Recovery Studies (Algonquin College) and a range of past and ongoing training. He has experience working clinically within a specialized mental health centre and in another private practice setting. David is fully qualified to provide psychotherapy services to individuals and groups according to the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. He has considerable experience in working with individuals who are facing substance use, mental health challenges or both.

Sarah Mackay is a (Qualifying) Registered Psychotherapist (# 009685) with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario and is working towards meeting the standards for individual practice at Ottawa River Psychology Group (ORPG). Sarah holds a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology from McGill University and trained at the McGill Psychoeducational and Counselling Clinic. She has begun specializing in mindfulness-based and compassion-focused therapies by completing Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) Core Skills as well as the Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) Advanced Clinical Skills. This year, Sarah has gained experience working with individuals who are facing substance use, mental health challenges or both.
